Hello DSAT,

My name is Sasha from Chalkboard Media located in Toronto.

We are developing a television pilot for a series that examines issues for and about people with disabilities. The subject of the pilot episode is the issue of inspiration porn; which is when a disability, and not the person, is used to create a narrative of inspiration for other people. Typically it’s an image or a story of a person with a disability doing something relatively normal: walking, working, graduating, etc. with a smile on their face and a cloying caption underneath that essentially implies ‘if they can do this thing, and be happy with life despite their obvious misfortune, then you can do anything, and you really ought to be happy you didn’t get dealt a worse hand in life.’

Inspiration porn is all around us and we would like to shed light on the stories of those who have felt objectified and some of the problems that our society faces by stripping away the humanity of the individual for the gratification of the observer.

We are reaching out to the community with the hope of finding stories about how inspiration porn has affected you and/or those around you. Please feel free to email sasharfisher@gmail.com with your stories, questions, concerns or names of anyone who may want to be involved in our show.

Thank you so much,

Sasha Fisher
