The 2015 HEROES Calendar is now available Dear DSAT Community, The organizers of Antonio’s Toy Drive have graciously offered DSAT the opportunity to sell the 2015 Calendar HEROES, as part of our yearly fundraising drive. This beautiful calendar features many of our local heroes in the DS community. We are VERY pleased to be a part of this and we hope you'll take this opportunity to support a good cause. “Meet the Parents” Pub Night – Adult Social From November 1 to 7, Canadians across the country will be celebrating the 45,000 people with Down syndrome in Canada for National Down Syndrome Awareness Week (NDSAW). DSAT Sibshops Dear DSAT families, A number of families have enquired about DSAT setting up a SibShop.  Potential guidelines for the DSAT Sibshop Sessions are as follows: Youth Group ages 6-12 yrs Timing : TBA (Suggested Monthly) Outings: 1-2 Hours  Overview: Children will do an activity then have time to discuss their siblings and feelings. There will be a facilitator at each event to work with the Children.  The children and parents will have an opportunity to help choose the activity they will do at the next event. Teen Group ages 13-19 yrs  Timing : TBA (Suggested Monthly) Outings: 2-3 Hours Overview: Teens will do an activity then have time to discuss their siblings and feelings.  There will be a facilitator at each event to work with the Teens. At each meeting they could discuss what activity they would like to do for the next month. ie bowling, skating, cooking lessons etc....
Individual Education Plan (IEPs) Resource or Burden? The Individual Education Plan (IEP) is probably the single most important document involving the school and parents around the fundamentals of dealing effectively with the deficits and limitations of children with special needs. Planning it and understanding are is essential to the development of a sound education for the student based on realistic, meaningful and measurable goals. Parents have to be informed about a fatal flaw in the execution of the IEP and why not detecting it can lead to a failure in the whole process. Music Therapy through New Song Music Therapy Ltd   DSAT is proud to offer Music Therapy through New Song Music Therapy Ltd. The program is call “The Music Tree (Early Intervention Music)” and is offer by Thyra Andrews BMT, MTA, AVPT, MA Candidate   This music program is for young children and does not require a formal assessment. The music tree programs aims to improve musical awareness, social skills, language skills, visual skills and auditory skills in the young children who participate. DramaWay Needs Participants  We wanted to update anyone who hasn't heard as of yet. We are unable to run any DramaWay programming unless we have 13 participants or more. We will have to make a choice on programs that are running and those that are not by the fast approaching deadline of September 16th. Currently, none of our programs have enough people to run.  Please spread the word about DramaWay and encourage your friends to sign up too. CALLING ALL TEENS WITH DOWN SYNDROME AGES 13 - 19 DSAT PAL 1319 (for teens age 13-19) DSAT is once again offering the program PAL 1319 (for teens age 13-19) This unique drop off program is designed for teens with Down syndrome (DS) to meet new friends, gain independence and develop life skills through fun, social outings with other teens with DS. Each outing will be organized, lead and fully supervised by the DSAT PAL 1319 team consisting of parents, professionals and volunteers. Such outings will include but not limited to; movies, bowling, dinner, etc. and will occur once a month, throughout the year. The teens will be encouraged to pay for necessary items (tickets, food, etc.) independently with cash, credit or debit, with adult supervision to encourage appropriate and suitable independence.   DOWN SYNDROME ~ DNA-Methylation Study McMaster University We have been sharing with our members and circle of friends, information on a study in the area of DNA methylation, a very important chemical process that is critical to the body’s proper function. Participants with Down syndrome (any age is accepted AND encouraged) will be required to do a blood test at McMaster Lab after their physician refers them to ONE of the study clinics that will run on September 11th , 18th and 25th. While attending one of these clinics, you will go through the informed consent process and obtain a requisition for blood work. Only one vial of blood is required for the study; it could be coordinated with other routine blood tests provided the referring physician is affiliated with McMaster. Why are we promoting this study?   Yoga 4 Kids Yoga Therapy for Children with Special Needs Yoga for the Special Child(R) is a therapeutic program of yoga techniques that enhances the natural development of infants, toddlers and children with special needs. The classes include music and sound therapy, eye exercises, yoga poses, breathing techniques, relaxation and meditation.
