Sportclusive is a welcoming, multi-sport program designed for children, youth, and adults with Down syndrome, while remaining open and inclusive to individuals with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. The program runs for sixteen weeks from January to May and eight weeks from September to December at the Bob Rumball Centre, offering three age-based groups (ages 4–10, 11–17, and 18+), each with up to 12 athletes.
This multi-sport program introduces participants to a variety of sports while building foundational athletic skills in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Over the course of the program, athletes explore multiple sports—such as basketball, soccer, badminton, and volleyball—spending two weeks on each to develop key skills and understanding of the game. Alongside sport-specific learning, the program emphasizes the development of agility, balance, coordination, and overall confidence through active participation. Session planning and facilitation will be led by University of Toronto Kinesiology students.
Participants are encouraged to come prepared with a water bottle, appropriate athletic footwear, comfortable clothing, and any assistive devices they may require to fully engage in all activities.
A core feature of Sportclusive is its one-to-one support model, where trained volunteers are paired with athletes. This approach enhances each participant’s experience by promoting active engagement, skill development, and meaningful social interaction throughout every session.
